Controlled Atmosphere Gas Carburizing

Controlled Atmosphere Gas Carburizing

We offer controlled atmosphere gas carburizing services. The carburizing process enhances parts with a hard, wear resistant surface, and a fully hardened martensitic core. Desired part core hardness is designed by customer product engineers via material selection. Desired part case depths are designed by product engineers, and controlled by several heat treat process variables.

A part’s carburized surface is produced by diffusing carbon into the surface of the heated parts via carbon rich carrier gasses. IST carburizes in controlled atmosphere furnaces, where endothermic gas and natural gas supply nascent carbon to the surface of the heated parts. The four main carburizing process variables are temperature, time at ...

Controlled Atmosphere Gas Carbonitriding

Controlled Atmosphere Gas Carbonitriding

The carbonitriding process enhances parts with a hard, wear resistant surface. Desired part case depths are designed by product engineers, and controlled by several heat treat process variables.

A part’s carbonitrided surface is produced by diffusing carbon and nitrogen into the surface of the heated part via carbon and nitrogen rich carrier gasses. Carbon is derived from endothermic gas and natural gas, nitrogen is derived from ammonia gas additions to the furnace atmosphere. The five main carbonitride process variables are temperature, time at temperature, carbon potential of the atmosphere gasses, ammonia volume, and part loading density.

Temperature control instrumentation reviews furnace temperatures and ...

Controlled Atmosphere Neutral Hardening and Carbon Restoration

Controlled Atmosphere Neutral Hardening and Carbon Restoration

Neutral Hardening
Neutral hardening is performed on steel alloys of sufficient hardenability to attain a designated surface and core hardness, without surface treatments (carburizing or carbonitriding). When neutral hardening in an atmosphere controlled furnace, the furnace atmosphere’s carbon potential is matched to the heated part’s carbon concentration; thus the heated part surfaces are not enriched or decarburized.

After heating in a neutral atmosphere, parts are quenched into furnace-integral, temperature controlled and agitation controlled oil baths. Quenching in oil fully hardens the parts; tempering is necessary after quenching to relieve stresses in the part from the heat treat process and to reduce part ...

Induction Processing

Induction Processing

Induction heat treating utilizes equipment that produces a varying magnetic field which is directed at selected locations on a work piece (part). The field is directed to the part via an engineered induction coil; the coil receives controlled electrical input from the generating source and production is moved through the coil at controlled rates. Selected areas of the part surface are heated to a specified depth, leaving the part-core cool and un-treated.

Equipment frequency, (kHz) is selected to match the required depth of field penetration in the part, power, (Kw) requirements are controlled to produce consistent results.

After heating the designated areas to specified depths, the parts are either quenched into a ...

Induction Hardened Bolt

Induction Hardened Fasteners

Industrial Steel Treating is the world’s largest heat treat processor of induction hardened fasteners. Twelve induction systems with a 900,000,000 piece annual capacity service the North American market with part handling capability ranging from M4 x 10 to M14 x 300. IST services Automotive, heavy truck, off-road, appliance, construction and military fastener suppliers throughout North America.

Fasteners are first hardened and tempered to grade in belt or batch furnace systems. The induction process hardens all lead threads and 1 - 3 full threads to specified hardness at depth. The resultant product is a neutral hardened fastener with self tapping or drilling threads, capable of cost effective, reliable and rapid assembly ...

Annealing/Normalizing/Stress Relieving

Annealing/Normalizing/Stress Relieving

Annealing is the treatment of a metal or alloy by heating to a predetermined temperature and then cooling to room temperature. Annealing improves ductility and reduces brittleness. IST anneals in a controlled atmosphere to avoid surface scaling.

Normalizing is the treatment of a metal or alloy by heating to a predetermined temperature above the material’s transformation temperature and then controlled cooling to well below the transformation range. Normalizing provides grain refinement and uniformity. IST normalizes in a controlled atmosphere to avoid surface scaling.

Stress Relieving is the treatment of a metal or alloy by heating to a predetermined temperature below its lower transformation temperature followed ...
